An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 shook the Bárðarbunga volcano at 7:11 this morning.
It was the most powerful quake at the volcanic site since its most recent eruption ended in February 2015.
Over 20 aftershocks followed the initial quake—one of which was a 3.3.
Seismic activity in the area died down quickly again from around 7:45 am.
Scientists and the Icelandic Met Office are following events closely, but there is no further cause for alarm at this time, Vísir reports.
Bárðarbunga is one of Iceland's most active volcanoes and is located under the Vatnajökull glacier. A small eruption in August 2014 led to the much larger Holuhraun eruption nearby, which is part of the same volcanic system. The latter eruption was one of the most lava-producing in recent times and ended in February 2015.
