[californiadisasters] [EDIS] Dangerous Weather Bulletin - SoCal (3/20/11-PM)



SNOW LEVELS ARE GENERALLY EXPECTED TO RANGE FROM 4500 TO 5500 FEET TODAY...ALTHOUGH THEY MAY RISE TO OVER 6000 FEET ON SOUTH FACING SLOPES FOR A WHILE DUE TO STRONG SOUTHERLY FLOW. SNOW LEVELS WILL LOWER TO AROUND 4000 FEET BEHIND THE FRONT LATE TONIGHT OR EARLY MONDAY. INTERSTATE 5 NEAR THE GRAPEVINE WILL BE IMPACTED BY STRONG SOUTHERLY WINDS AND HEAVY RAIN THROUGH TONIGHT...WITH SNOW SHOWERS POSSIBLE LATE TONIGHT INTO MONDAY.  ... WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON PDT MONDAY... THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN LOS ANGELES/OXNARD HAS CONTINUED  A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR THE COMBINATION OF HEAVY SNOW AND WIND FOR THE SANTA BARBARA COUNTY MOUNTAINS. THIS WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON PDT MONDAY. * TIMING: SNOW...HEAVY AT TIMES WILL CONTINUE THROUGH MIDNIGHT. STEADY PRECIPITATION WILL TURN TO SHOWERS AFTER MIDNIGHT TONIGHT...THEN SHOWERS WILL DECREASE BY MONDAY AFTERNOON. * SNOW ACCUMULATIONS: SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 8 TO 12 INCHES ARE EXPECTED ABOVE 5000 FEET THROUGH MIDDAY MONDAY. LOCAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS UP TO 18 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE ACROSS THE HIGHEST PEAKS. * WINDS: SOUTHEAST TO SOUTH WINDS 35 TO 45 MPH WITH DAMAGING GUSTS TO 75 MPH ARE EXPECTED TODAY. WINDS WILL SHIFT TO SOUTHWEST TO WEST AND DIMINISH THIS EVENING OR EARLY TONIGHT. * SNOW LEVELS: SNOW LEVELS WILL BE BETWEEN 4500 AND 5000 FEET THROUGH THIS EVENING...EXCEPT THEY MAY RISE ABOVE 5500 FEET FOR A WHILE ON SOUTH FACING SLOPES. SNOW LEVELS WILL THEN LOWER TO BETWEEN 4000 AND 4500 FEET LATE TONIGHT INTO MONDAY. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... &&

.A POWERFUL LATE SEASON WINTER STORM WILL BRING SIGNIFICANT SNOW  AND VERY STRONG WINDS TO THE MOUNTAINS THROUGH EARLY MONDAY. RAIN AND SNOW...HEAVY AT TIMES WILL CONTINUE THROUGH TONIGHT. STEADY PRECIPITATION WILL TURN TO SHOWERS ACROSS SANTA BARBARA COUNTY AROUND MIDNIGHT...BUT NOT UNTIL EARLY MONDAY MORNING ACROSS LOS  ANGELES COUNTY. SHOWERS WILL GRADUALLY DECREASE DURING THE DAY ON MONDAY. THERE IS A SLIGHT CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH MONDAY MORNING. * IMPACTS: SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL AND VERY STRONG WINDS WILL BRING DANGEROUS WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS...WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF DOWNED TREES AND POWER LINES. DENSE FOG AND BLOWING SNOW COULD LOCALLY REDUCE VISIBILITIES TO ONE QUARTER MILE OR LESS AT TIMES. A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL  DANGEROUS. ONLY TRAVEL IN AN EMERGENCY. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL... KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT... FOOD...AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.
