during that quake and the tsunamis!!!) show us the issues of personal safety
response:
1. Run? Most people could barely stand. Folks in the NHK newsroom were
hanging on to desks to keep from being thrown down. People outside got down
or were put down. Moving, more than a few feet, to a "safe place" just
wasn't practical. Seems that leaves duck, cover, and hold on.
2. In Sendai airport, the ceilings came down; good thing the people weren't
in the center of the room. (Ceiling in the NHK newsroom thankfully did not
come down, at least during the video.)
3. In one shot, some young men ran out of a building. They were really fast
and also happened to be in good place, because even as they left the
building, the building was raining chunks that just happened to miss them.
(Speed only helps to keep you from being in one place for long; if you're in
the wrong place at the wrong moment, your speed is of no importance.)
--------
One of the factors about this earthquake event is that it happened in Japan,
which might very well be the best-earthquake-prepared nation on earth. Yet
we see few in the newsroom getting under desks, etc.; we see people running
outside. The better we get in practice, the closer to correct we'll be when
it's real.
