In the wee hours of this morning in 2006 an arsonist's fire began near Cabazon and strong Santa Ana Winds fanned it southward through 41,173 acres of wildland where a few hours into the incident it overwhelmed and wiped out an entire 5-person USFS engine company based on the San Bernardino NF (Engine 57) which at the time was conducting structure protection for an isolated compound located at the head of a drainage up which the fire rapidly burned through. Ultimately, the fire consumed 34 homes and 20 outbuildings.
