[Volcano_Vista_HS] Yvonne Garcia selected as new Rio Grande Principal

Yvonne Garcia to Finish School Year as Principal at Volcano Vista

Long-time Albuquerque Public Schools Principal Yvonne Garcia, who started her teaching career at Rio Grande High, has been named the school's new principal. Garcia will finish the school year at Volcano Vista High, where she has been principal for the past five years, taking the helm at Rio Grande in July.

Superintendent Winston Brooks made the announcement after receiving the recommendation of a selection committee made up of APS administrators and Rio Grande parents, teachers and a student.

"Yvonne is one of our shining stars in APS. She is a strong district leader who has earned the respect and admiration of her students, staff, parents and peers," said Brooks. "Though she'll be missed at Volcano Vista, I know Yvonne has the skills and passion to continue to help Rio Grande students achieve academic success, graduate with their peers and move on to post-secondary education or careers."

Linda Sink, APS chief academic officer, will continue to serve as interim principal at Rio Grande through the end of the school year. She will help Garcia with the transition. Garcia, in turn, will help her replacement with the transition to Volcano Vista.

Brooks said a process similar to that used at Rio Grande will be used to fill the principal position at Volcano Vista.

Garcia began her teaching career at Rio Grande where she spent eight years as a science teacher. She also served as an instructional coach, cheerleader sponsor, MESA advisor, class sponsor and teacher trainer. "I am ready to once again be a Raven," she said. "I look forward to working with the Rio Grande staff, students, parents and the community on continuing the educational reforms outlined in the school's redesign plan."

Garcia served as an assistant principal at Van Buren Middle School before moving to Eldorado High, where she spent four years as the curriculum assistant principal and then five years as principal. In 2006 she became the first principal at Volcano Vista, opening it as the first new APS high school in more than 20 years.

"As a principal, I recognize that my role is to provide the necessary guidance and support for all staff so they can best serve our students," she said. "Every student needs the opportunity to succeed, and students perform their best within a strong learning culture."
