Yeah, references to this in the main headlines were confusing, but looking
at the bridge from the many live cams, here's what appears:

1. Unlike many freeway bridges that have support structures on either side
of the freeway and in the median, this bridge crosses the entire freeway in
one span (and that span is only barely wide enough for the current freeway
lanes). Therefore the unique situation, where the entire freeway must be
shut down to take out the bridge's center span.

2. The center span amounts to about half the length of the bridge. It
appears that this explains the references to "half the bridge". It seems
completely illogical that they'd be taking down one lane now and one lane
later, but it wouldn't be hard to take down the end spans and posts without
shutting down the freeway.
