That isn’t the US and it doesn’t make it better or wrong.  It’s strictly a local decision decided by local need, funding and ability.  Driving a motorcycle is inherently dangerous; downright crazy in CA.  That must be factored in as well, not that driving in Europe is um, civilized by any means.  That’s two vehicles to maintain for the response, at least, in addition to the normal response.  The days of a solo response are gone, thank goodness.

 

Still, it’s a valid proof of concept test which may be very useful when ‘the big one’ hits.  Minimal cost as the bikes are on loan; good community support; as it should be.  Using GPS trackers isn’t new (all my vehicles have them, two also have OnStar) but it sure simplifies things in dispatch (more so with computer aided dispatch).  Not only can you tell where all the players are located, to send the closest available, you can also tell when they’re um, not where they’re supposed to be or if they’re speeding etc.  Bosses like that.

I rather like the idea of deploying BLS on motorcycles! They are much more maneuverable in traffic than normal Rescue rigs. In addition, they would probably be more flexible in dealing with natural and unplanned disaster scenarios (yeah, this one was being scripted for quite a while). Unfortunately, with budgets being extremely tight, this type of innovation may go away as a two-off as they redeploy when the other half of the span is removed at a later date. 73, kevin
