08/20/2011 | 0930 | On August 20-21, 1910, the "Big Blowup" fires in Idaho, Washington, and Montana occurred. The fires killed burned over 3 million acres in two days and killed 87 people. In response, President Teddy Roosevelt, Congress, and USFS Chief Gifford Pinchot expanded the Forest Service, adopted an agressive fire management policy, and acquired more public lands for conservation.
