| Notes: | On this date in 1933 a fire began in the Mineral Wells area of Griffith Park. At the time nearly 4,000 men were clearing brush in the park as a contingent of Depression Era welfare project. Many of the men volunteered to fight the fire and were set to the task of combating the wildfire with no knowledge of firefighting. A wind shift caught hundreds of men in a canyon and burned them alive killing 29 and injuring 150. The fire ultimately charred 47 acres. | |
