[californiadisasters] Great California ShakeOut & Social Media

The 2011 Great California ShakeOut is coming Thursday, October 20, at 10:20 A.M.   Don't be left behind as over 7.9 million (and still counting!) people join in the biggest earthquake drill ever!

 

Here's what may be new to some of you:  The ShakeOut also maintains both Facebook and Twitter accounts, and both are ripe for sharing tips and encouraging others to join the drill and to get prepared.  I started writing most of the content-oriented posts (versus statistical updates) on behalf of the Earthquake Country Alliance and the ShakeOut in 2010,  and I am doing so again especially in regard to the 2011 FB posts. 

 

As we approach 10:20 AM on October 20, 2011, there will be an increase in the number of posts in both social media.  Typically I don't send as many tweets as I do FB posts, but some bright, capable and very "with it" students studying at USC's Southern CA Earthquake Center will also be doing a lot of the tweets as we ramp up in these final days.  Their posts will have more of a fun aspect, while my content tends to be more informational and/or serious. 

 

I find it sometimes challenging to try to anticipate what will help people, and/or get them talking, since people come to the ShakeOut for many different reasons.  The informational needs of a business that has registered, is usually quite different than a neighborhood group, or a senior with medical and functional needs looking only at preparedness from an individual perspective.  Some followers are also quite knowledgeable and into preparedness, while for some this is the first time they have begun to be aware.  So I do try to vary the types of tips and content I provide.  You can certainly scan some of the past posts, and if you have suggestions for threads you'd really like to see, please feel free to contact me off-list.  The social media links are:
