All of the goals for the Volcano Vista High School girls soccer team remain within reach, thanks to a pair of crafty veterans.

The second-ranked Hawks' exciting 2-1 girls soccer win Wednesday night at Cleveland — highlighted by Ruth Bruciaga's goal in the 77th minute — was a welcome development on several fronts.

Volcano Vista not only avenged an earlier loss to the Storm, but the Hawks now can win the District 1-5A championship on Friday against Rio Rancho. And a top-four seed for the state tournament is virtually assured after this result.

"It was a huge win," said Bruciaga. "We all wanted this, especially for our seniors."

Bruciaga beat Cleveland goalkeeper Xan Ortiz from about 16 yards out just as the teams seened headed for overtime. And Bruciaga's goal came not long after teammate Ashley Williams, 5A's leading scorer, scored on a chip shot goal from roughly 20 yards away to tie the the game in the 66th minute.

The Hawks (14-3 overall) are 4-1 in 1-5A. They must beat Rio Rancho at 3 p.m. Friday at VVHS to secure the 1-5A title. The Rams (13-5, 3-2), who edged Cibola 1-0 Wednesday, can claim the 1-5A title with a two-goal victory.

A one-goal win would send the teams into a more complicated tiebreaking scenario.

"Cleveland is a great team and they're always a team we want to beat," said Volcano Vista coach Samantha Lucero. "We need that top-four seed. That's been our goal the whole time."

Fifth-ranked Cleveland (12-5, 2-3 in 1-5A) two weeks ago had a chance for the No. 1 seed for state after an overtime win over Sandia. Emily Cubbage's nifty header goal in the 21st minute staked Cleveland to a 1-0 lead. But she was injured on the play and did not return.
