07/22/2012 | 0733 | July 22, 2003 – Cramer Fire On July 22, 2003, Indianola Helitack crewmembers Shane Heath and Jeff Allen were killed on the Cramer Fire, Salmon-Challis National Forest, North Fork RD, Idaho. While constructing a helispot, the fire that had been smoldering in the Cache Bar drainage came into alignment with a southwest slope in the afternoon and ran uphill towards their position. Although they attempted to flee, they were overtaken by superheated air from the flaming front below them. The subsequent Accident Prevention Plan, released in 2004, influences wildland firefighting procedures today, particularly at the Type-3 incident level. Among the changes were certification and re-certification processes for new and existing ICT3s. For more information, visit http://www.wlfalwaysremember.org/incident-lists/114-cramer.html |
