Title: | 1992 Sepulveda Basin Flash Flood
Date: | Sunday February 10, 2013
Time: | 2:45 pm - 2:45 pm (GMT-08.00) Pacific Time (US & Canada)
Location: | San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County
Notes: | Many current and former residents of Southern California will remember this storm out of the many that struck Southern California during the El Nino Winter of 1991-1992. Following a deluge of 27 inches of rain in 12 hours and 12 inches of rain in two hours which fell in the mountains north of the San Fernando Valley a major flash flood occurred that overwhelmed the Sepulveda Flood Control Basin which is typically open to traffic for those of you not familiar with the area. Many motorists were trapped on the roofs of their autos and even a fire truck was stuck in the rapidly rising waters. Helicopters had to be employed to pluck people to safety. In one infamous incident a man was plucked via rope suspended from a helicopter and after rising many dozens of feet lost his grip and fell back into the water.
