A wildfire burning in the Big Sur area had spread to 550 acres by Monday afternoon, led to mandatory evacuations and destroyed an estimated 15 homes, according to NBC affiliate KSBW.
The fire began around midnight in the Pfeiffer Ridge area of the Los Padres National Forest near Highway 1 as it burned through dry vegetation.
Mandatory evacuations were ordered residents living on Pfeiffer Ridge Road.
No injuries have been reported.
California state fire spokesman Jonathan Pangburn said the wildfire was moving toward the ocean, but there were residences scattered along its path.
Scores of firefighters were called in to battle the blaze. Pangburn said officials were bringing in air resources as well.
As of 11 a.m., the wildfire was zero percent contained, U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Lynn Olson told KSBW, who reports that one of the houses that burned belongs to Big Sur's fire chief.
Big Sur is a popular tourist destination along the Central California coast known for its views of the Pacific.
The last major fire in Big Sur happened in 2008, when a lightning-sparked wildfire burned 250 square miles and several homes.
