[californiadisasters] Caltrans to make $5.3 million worth of earthquake-related repairs

Caltrans to make $5.3 million worth of earthquake-related repairs

The abutments under Imola Avenue's Maxwell Bridge are being repaired after pieces of concrete cracked and fell off when the span moved during the 6.0-magnitude earthquake on Aug. 24.

While the structure is safe for traffic, it has to be repaired, Caltrans officials said during a media tour on Tuesday.

"The damage is minimum but we need to maintain the bridge's integrity for future events – if any," said Nick Abuhamdieh, senior bridge engineer for Caltrans.

Altogether, Caltrans plans to make $5.3 million worth of earthquake-related emergency repairs at 11 locations in Napa and Solano counties, including south Napa's Maxwell and Butler bridges, overpasses on Old Sonoma Road and First Street and the Lombard crossing in American Canyon. The repairs should be completed by December, officials said.

In all cases, the structures are safe for travel, Caltrans said.

On the Maxwell bridge, built in 2006, workers will replace sections of concrete and steel barrier damaged during the big shake. This work should be completed in about a month, Abuhamdieh said.

Then the contractor, Disney Construction, will replace 30 feet of damaged abutment on the Butler Bridge on Highway 29, according to Caltrans. The foundations of that bridge, built in 1977, were seismically retrofitted in 1996, according to Caltrans. Footings were enlarged and foundation piles added.

The damage on the Butler Bridge includes settlement on the four approaches and a broken piece of abutment measuring 6-inches wide by 6-feet long that exposed rebar on the west side. Altogether, 30 feet of supporting wall will have to be replaced, Abuhamdieh said.

Another Caltrans contractor, O.C. Jones, will make earthquake-related repairs at the overcrossing over Highway 29 at Old Sonoma Road, which was built in 1961, and the one on First Street, which was constructed in 1964.

The repairs include replacing seismic cables that were stretched during the earthquake, according to Caltrans. In preparation for that work, Caltrans has been looking for anyone who knows whoever was responsible for a mural memorial under the bridge's eastern abutment.

In American Canyon, the highway approaches to the Lombard rail overcrossing on Highway 29 on the city's northern edge were also damaged during the quake.

There was no structural damage, Caltrans engineers said. "Structurally, I think it's all good," said Joy Sharma, Caltrans resident engineer who is working on the project.

Nighttime lane closures are planned as workers repair cracks in the asphalt on all four lane approaches to the 1979 rail overcrossing, Caltrans engineers said. The Lombard overcrossing had not been seismically retrofitted, officials said.

Construction dates have not been announced. The repairs should be completed in December, according to Caltrans.

A series of emergency repairs were done right after the Aug. 24 earthquake, according to Caltrans. Caltrans inspectors, who assessed 29 state highway bridges, also inspected all seven Bay Area toll bridges and found no damage.
