Dog rescued as firefighters battle 300-acre blaze in Riverside County [Updated]

As a 300-acre brush fire burned in Riverside County on Wednesday afternoon, Brian Bedwell was fleeing with his dog Archie. But the frightened pet got loose and ran away, according to authorities.

The blaze, which was burning in the Glen Avon area near Granite Hill and Quartz Canyon Road, was 25% contained Wednesday evening after briefly threatening a mobile home park that was partly evacuated.

Bedwell ended up receiving good news when officers from the Riverside County Department of Animal Services found Archie, agency spokesman John Welsh said.

[Updated 8:03 p.m.: Archie was initially rescued by a Riverside County sheriff's deputy, Welsh said.]

"The dog didn't have to wait long for his owner to show up," Welsh said, adding that Archie was wearing a microchip containing Bedwell's contact information.

In all, Welsh said, five dogs were evacuated from the fire.

The blaze was fanned by 15 mph winds as more than 250 firefighters aided by four air tankers and three water-dropping helicopters worked to beat back the flames, the Riverside County Fire Department said. Residents who had been evacuated from the Santiago Estates Mobile Home Park were allowed to return to their homes.
