Search underway for CHP plane near Salton Sea

A search was underway Friday night for a California Highway Patrol observation plane that may have gone down southwest of the Salton Sea in Imperial County, authorities said.

The plane, thought to have only the pilot aboard, has been out of contact for several hours. The search involves multiple law enforcement agencies from Imperial and Riverside counties.

The Salton Sea, which straddles the two counties, is surrounded by mountainous terrain on the north and southwest and deserts on the east.
