4A Softball: Volcano Vista and Silver Advance
LAS CRUCES - When Silver and Volcano Vista clashed in the 2009 Class 4A state softball tournament, it was a 1-0 win for Volcano Vista in extra innings. But that was in the consolation round.
Today, when the teams meet at the Field of Dreams Complex, a lot more will be at stake: The Colts and Hawks will meet in one of the two 4A semifinals that begin at 9 a.m.
No. 1 seed Piedra Vista will face Moriarty in the other semifinal, with the winners to play at 1:30 p.m. for the state crown.
"They're extremely tough," Silver coach Duane Trewern said regarding Volcano. "They're not the No. 2 seed by mistake."
Third-seeded Silver, hoping to return to the title game where it lost 4-3 to Piedra Vista a year ago, eased through Friday's games, beating Roswell 10-0 and Del Norte 11-0. Alexis Castillo was one of Silver's many offensive stars, going 2-for-3 in the Del Norte game.
Del Norte, the No. 11 seed, had to outlast Kirtland Central, 7-6, to advance to the quarterfinals.
"Del Norte really is a tough team, and I've struggled my whole career to beat their teams, so it feels good to get one against them," said Trewern.
Volcano Vista (25-3) earned its spot in the semis by taking advantage of Valencia's defensive woes in a 13-0 win, then hanging on 2-1 to beat Farmington. All three of that game's runs were scored in the fourth inning.
Moriarty, the No. 5 seed, reached the semis behind back-to-back no-hitters from junior pitcher Morgan McWilliams. The Pintos beat Española Valley 5-0 in the morning. Then, in the quarterfinals against Aztec, Amber Coleman reached on an error and scored the game's only run in a 1-0 Moriarty win.
Aztec pulled off the upset of the day in 4A. The 13th-seeded Tigers beat No. 4 Artesia, 11-0.
Piedra Vista 26-2 overall and 23-0 against New Mexico teams, sailed through the first two rounds, beating Bernalillo 11-0 and St. Pius 9-2. Panther pitcher Karysta Donisthorpe struck out 17 St. Pius batters and yielded only one hit to the Sartans.
The state softball tourneys, which had been run as double-elimination affairs the past several seasons, are single-elimination this year as a cost-cutting measure.
