Moderator's Note: I was at the game yesterday and wanted to congratulate our young men for a valiant effort! They never gave up and came close to tying/winning the game. Piedra Vista is the #1 seed and is a great team! We are proud of our VVHS Hawks Boys Baseball Team!
PIEDRA VISTA 6, VOLCANO VISTA 5
The Panthers (21-6) put on a power display early, belting three long home runs. Jake McCasland and Shane Woodson smacked two-run shots well over the left-field fence, and Shilo McCall added a solo shot as PVHS built its 6-0 lead with one out in the second inning.
"I was thinking it might be a run-rule game," McCasland said.
But Hawks reliever Victor Sanchez settled things down, getting McCasland to ground into a double play to end the second and shutting Piedra Vista out for the next five innings. The junior right-hander allowed just four hits and struck out eight.
"Victor gave us a tremendous effort," Hawks coach Kevin Andersh said. "He gave us a chance to win."
Sanchez's solo homer and Anthony Cardosa's two-run single highlighted a three-run Volcano Vista fifth that cut the deficit to 6-4. Andrew Villareal's RBI hit made it 6-5 in the sixth.
Andre Vigil's two-out double in the seventh gave the Hawks (20-9) a final shot to get even, but McCasland came on in relief to strike out Sanchez and finally end things.
