USGS: Magnitude-6.8 quake hits Negros area; Phivolcs hints damage possible

A magnitude-6.8 quake jolted the Negros area in the Visayas region before noon Monday, the United States Geological Survey said.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology head Renato Solidum Jr. said the quake was strong enough to be felt in parts of Northern Mindanao.

"Yung damage posible (sa may Intensity V) kung mahina ang gusali," Solidum said in an interview on dzBB radio.

There were no reports of actual damage and casualties as of posting time.

According to a Reuters report, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that based on all available data, a Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected.

Citing initial reports reaching him, Solidum said the quake was recorded at 11:49 a.m. and was felt at:

  • Intensity V (strong): Iloilo, Negros; and
  • Intensity IV: Cebu, Kalibo.

He also said the quake was felt in Bohol, and parts of northern Mindanao.

The United States Geological Survey initially measured the quake at magnitude 6.8.

It estimated the epicenter at:

  • 71 km south-southeast of Bacolod
  • 79 km north of Dumaguete
  • 88 km west-southwest of Cebu
  • 564 km south-southeast of Manila.
