Re: [Geology2] Links to info and more images from NZ eruptions

No I didn't know that. And the highways are built around the cairns? I would not have thought that in Iceland. Maybe Ireland but  not Iceland. That is sweet. Well I am going to google Cherokee myths and check out that story. Thanks..Allisoin

Many legends from native cultures often describe and pinpoint in time when a natural disaster has occurred. The Mexican/Mayan past culture identifies Popocatepetl and his beloved Iztaccihuatl as two of the local deities embedded within their volcanoes and their story pretty much relays quality and quantity of each volcano's history. In New Zealand, it the Maori culture that anthropomorphizes their volcanoes. In  Hawaii, the native culture there centers their volcano myths around Pelee. Even here in Tennessee, there is a Cherokee legend regarding the 1811-12 earthquakes that describes the doomed romance between a native princess and her club footed suitor.

I, too, am fascinated with how people described natural history without the benefit of science and how some come very near to getting it right via metaphor. In short, there is much truth to be found in myth.

PS Did you know that in Iceland, highways are built around cairns dedicated to the wee, Fae folks?

I googled some of the Malay comments on this site... and most of them had to do with the idea that there is a direct relationship between human behavior and the volcano's behavior. It was vague because there were some words Google couldn't translate but I got the distinct impression that Tongariro is a personal entity to these folks, not just a scientific pimple on the earth's surface blowing off steam. Interesting...I will always be interested in the human factor. Allison
