[californiadisasters] 2003 San Simeon Quake, 12/22/2012, 11:15 am

Reminder from:   californiadisasters Yahoo! Group

Title:   2003 San Simeon Quake

Date:   Saturday December 22, 2012
Time:   11:15 am - 11:15 am
Location:   Coast Range of San Luis Obispo County
Notes:   At a quarter after 11 AM on this date in 2003 a strong M6.5 earthquake resulting from a rupture of the Oceanic Fault Zone under the Santa Lucia Mountains of San Luis Obispo County rocked the Central Coast of California killing two women in downtown Paso Robles. The earthquake rupture began near under Heart Castle but moved along the southeast axis of the fault away from the castle and towards Paso Robles, Templeton and Atascadero where the majority of the damage occurred. Due to an abundance of water under downtown Paso Robles liquifaction was a problem as was the aged nature of many buildings in that immediate area which resulted in heavy damage to many historic structures and the partial collapse of the historic Acorn Building. This is where the fatalities occurred on the sidewalk next to it when bricks rained down on those fleeing the structure.
Mission San Miguel was heavily damaged as were many parts Highway 46 West. One unusual pocket of damage was located in Guadalupe in Northern Santa Barbara County while another one was located in Oceano in Southern San Luis Obispo County all the while much closer but quite vulnerable localities such as San Luis Obispo were relatively unscathed. An old dried up hot mineral spring reactivated in a major way during the quake and gushed out of cracks in the parking lot of the Paso Robles Public Library and continues spewing to this day keeping the parking lot partially closed.
