[californiadisasters] Re: No power. No phones. No internet. What would you do?

Excellent comment Lynn - I would hope you shared your thoughts with the link posted in the original post on the topic.

A friend was a LtCol in the Louisiana State Police during Katrina and he has told me that hams were a HUGE help as cell phones were down and Satellite phones were unusable as all the news media tied up all the limited number of satellite channels available.

Due to hurricanes and blizzards I have found that phone via CATV/Broadband companies is usually the first service to fail during a power outage. In my neighborhood I am about the only person using the older copper-wire phone service and am the only person with a working phone during an outage.

PS as to American Red Cross radios, as far as I know all ARC vehicles in the US are equipped with radio's on the national ARC frequency of 47.42MHz which work directly without repeaters.
