Dry lightning up here from late afternoon on through the evening. More lightning is expected today.
While the desert actually got a lot of rain (Ridgecrest and Boron reported flooding), not much rain fell in the kern mountains themselves when the bolts started hitting. Add to that the wind has been pretty fierce around these storms, and we are watching some pretty dangerous conditions up here…Redhart in Tehachapi

Lightning ignites forest fires in Kern

The Kern County Fire Department is fighting several lightning related fires this morning along the eastern mountains, and crews' efforts are being challenged by strong winds.
Since 9 p.m. Sunday, firefighters have received reports of multiple fires. One, called the Shirley Fire, had grown to 250 to 300 acres by 6:30 a.m. It's burning about two miles west of the Shirley Peak Ski Resort. It's burning in heavy timber, the fire department reports.
"Right now we're just sending numerous resources to those areas," fire Engineer Leland Davis said at about 6:30 a.m.
Also, the Flat Fire has burned about 20 acres in the Breckenridge Mountains. Two other fires have been reported, Davis said.
Fire officials will soon put a suggested evacuation in effect in the Alta Sierra and Slick Rock campground areas.
Davis said Ridgecrest is being hit by heavy rain. Crews responded to reports of a car in a mudslide in the area.
