Homes saved in South San Francisco wildfire

(09-07) 17:23 PDT South San Francisco -- A grass fire in the San Bruno Mountain State Park burned about 40 acres Saturday afternoon before 120 firefighters, including some in air tankers, got it under control, authorities said.About 100 structures were threatened by the fire, which started shortly before 2 p.m. near Hillside Boulevard and Lucca Drive in South San Francisco, said Scott Galbert, a CalFire chief for San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties.
Galbert said neighbors described hearing a large explosion, then seeing flames shoot up the hillside toward both the north and east. It took crews about two hours to get the blaze under control, he said. Its cause is under investigation.
No houses were evacuated, but firefighters did move engines into the neighborhood as a precaution, he said.
Fire crews will be mopping up in the area until about 11 p.m. Saturday, according to Galbert.
Columns of black and gray smoke that towered above the blaze in the early afternoon were visible from much of the Bay Area.
