202 flu-related deaths in California this season, nearly double last season's number
KABC-TV Los AngelesThe number of people who have died from the flu in California has grown to 202, the state department of public health announced Friday. Four of those deaths were children.
An additional 41 deaths are under investigation, according to the department.
The Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego and Fresno areas saw the most deaths, with 26, 21, 15, 17 and 15 deaths respectively. Santa Clara saw 10 deaths, with other areas in the single digits.
A total of 106 people reportedly died from flu-related illness in the 2012-2013 influenza season.
People at highest risk, including the elderly, pregnant women, infants, or those with other health conditions, who show flu symptoms should contact their physician immediately in order to get the most effective treatment. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and fatigue.
The California Department of Public Health encourages vaccination. Influenza vaccine remains available and there is no widespread shortage of anti-virals for treatment. CDPH continues to closely monitor influenza activity statewide and related resources.
