An Australian man has died from a suspected asthma attack before attempting to climb Indonesia's Mount Rinjani volcano.

Police say the 53-year-old died two kilometres from the entrance to the mountain park on Monday morning.

"The victim is suspected to have died due to his asthma condition," police captain I Wayan Redana said.

"[He] was evacuated by an officer from Bayan Police Station, North Lombok ... at 12:00pm local time."

Rinjani, an active volcano on the island of Lombok, is becoming popular with tourists, who are able to climb about 2,700 metres to its rim or take a more arduous climb to its peak.

Rinjani is the second highest volcano in Indonesia.
