KTVU.com —

A school in the South Bay is demonstrating its earthquake early warning system.

Milpitas Christian School is one of two schools in California that uses the latest QuakeGuard technology to warn everyone on campus an earthquake is coming before it's felt.

The technology was engineered by Seismic Warning Systems which is a company based out of Scotts Valley. Company officials say it detects, analyzes and issues a warning in less than one second before the quake comes, which gives people time to protect themselves.

The system has been installed for the past ten years, but Monday a representative from the State Office of Emergency Services came to the school to observe the system which may be installed in other schools in the Central Valley.

In the drill Monday, children ducked and covered and quickly evacuated the classrooms.

Seismic Warning Systems recently formed a public private partnership that made it possible for the system to be installed at fire departments, hospitals and transit systems in the Imperial Valley. That was all funded by FEMA and the Office of Emergency Services.

The company is trying to expand more in the Bay Area. In the company's 13 year history, a spokesman says it has never had a false alarm.
