King wildfire in El Dorado County grows; progress made on blaze near Weed
The number of acres burned by the timber-devouring King fire in El Dorado County grew overnight as the wildland blaze continues its advance through remote foothill canyons.
So far, a total of 11,570 acres have burned near the south fork of the American River, just northeast of Pollock Pines. The fire began meekly on Saturday just off King of the Mountain Road, east of Pollock Pines.
But on Monday the fire roared, spreading at a high rate of speed in steep terrain. At nightfall, the total burned was 8,600 acres and the fire was just 5 percent contained.
Overnight, the fire grew nearly 3,000 acres, Calfire reported Tuesday. Containment remained at just 5 percent.
Evacuations and road closures remain in place, according to authorities. And Pollock Pines Elementary School District campuses remain closed.
A total of 1,555 fire personnel are battling the blaze. Fire engines numbered 182 and the effort was being waged from the air by planes dumping retardant and helicopters soaking terrain with water.
The fire is under investigation. A shelter for residents displaced by the fire has been moved to the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 3520 Carson Road in Camino.
Firefighters have made progress on a smaller but more destructive fire, in terms of structures destroyed, in Siskiyou County. The Boles fire near the town of Weed, which started on Monday, has burned 375 acres and is 20 percent contained.
Officials said that more than 100 structures have been destroyed by the blaze.
