Re: [Geology2] Pahoehoe Lava



The other type lava is "aa! aa!"  which is Hawaiian for "Ouch Ouch that is hot" 

There is a brief bit of time when pahoehoe stops glowing but remains a taffy like glass raft.  Drag on the keel of the partially molten raft by the flowing lava underneath, causes the pahoehoe crust to buckle.  Some is informally called "entrail" lava because it looks like a mass of intestines.  The pahoehoe chills from the outside inward and walking on it makes a crinkle noise like walking on broken glass.   In the center of the photo below one can see how the waffer-thin upper surface flakes when walked on.
