Bay Bridge investigators have found rust and cracks on a steel rod that had been submerged in water, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
The rod is one of hundreds of fasteners from the tower's foundation. They were sitting in water because of bad grout work, according to the newspaper.
Now, they reportedly cannot be removed without being destroyed, which leaves engineers in a bind.
The damage is just the latest in a string of construction problems, but this one could be the most serious.
