Re: [Geology2] Volcanoes' alert levels dropped

That's one of the reasons we're here in Nikiski (Kenai).  We'll be here a few nights then wander towards Homer (a volcano is visible from there too).

Bloody cold here tonight.  Internet (AT&T Edge) sucks.

Volcanoes' alert levels dropped

GNS Science has dropped the alert levels for the White Island and Tongariro volcanoes, which have been quiet since eruptions at the beginning of the month.

17 August 2012

GNS Science has downgraded the activity levels of both the Tongariro and White Island volcanoes.

White Island experienced a small explosive eruption in its Crater Lake on August 5, followed three days later by an ash eruption, which formed a new vent in the lake.

Tongariro erupted on August 6, spewing out rocks and ash and damaging the Ketetahi Hut on the popular Tongariro Crossing.

The volcanoes' alert level was raised from one to two, on a scale of five.

On Friday, GNS Science said that following a decline in activity it was not expecting any further eruptions and the alert levels were dropped back to one, which indicates "departure from typical background surface activity".

The aviation colour code, which applies only to aircraft near the volcano, remains at yellow, indicating "elevated unrest above known background levels".

However, volcanologist Steven Sherburn said visitors to White Island should still be aware it could erupt at any time with little or no warning.
