Highway 299 crash causes fire while passing hay truck ignites
Crews have been working to rescue four people from the Trinity River after a vehicle plunged off Highway 299, igniting a fire that jumped the highway and set on fire a passing hay truck. The road was closed in the area of Del Loma, about 35 miles west of Weaverville, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The vehicle caught on fire, causing the surrounding brush and trees to ignite. The fire spread and jumped the highway and was spreading west, according to the California Highway Patrol's website.
A hay truck passing through the area caught on fire and continued down the road and was last seen headed west on fire toward Hawkins Bar.
The incident was first reported just before 8 p.m. Crews were still at the scene at 11 p.m.

Additional crews and engines and helicopter and fixed-wing air resources are on order for tomorrow. The fire is estimated to be holding at 50 acres. It is believed that the fire started as the result of a vehicle accident.
