[californiadisasters] National Fire News - California (7/30/10)



Initial attack activity was moderate across the country yesterday. Three new large fires were reported, two in California and one in Nevada. Firefighters are battling five blazes in California where residents from several communities have been evacuated.

Fifty-four large fires are being managed to achieve multiple objectives throughout the states. Uncontained large fires include only fires being managed under a full suppression strategy.

The Department of the Interior personnel are assigned to several locations in the Gulf of Mexico to assess and mitigate impacts resulting form the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Weather: Mostly wet thunderstorms are expected today over much of the Intermountain West except for dry weather over California and western Nevada. Gusty winds are on tap for northeast California, western Nevada, and the east slopes of the Cascades.

NEW Crown (Los Angeles County FD): 2,000 acres at zero percent contained. This fire is seven miles northwest of Acton. Numerous structures are threatened and evacuations are in effect.

NEW Briggs (Angeles National Forest): 350 acres at 0 percent contained. This fire is five miles southwest of Acton. Evacuations are in effect.
McDonald (W-23) (Northern California District, Bureau of Land Management): 9,000 acres at 10 percent contained. This fire is three miles northeast of Thermo.
West (Kern County FD, Cal Fire): 1,658, acres at 44 percent contained. This fire is five miles south of Tehachapi. Residences are threatened. Evacuations are in effect.

Bull (Sequoia National Forest): 16,074, acres at 20 percent contained. This fire is 3ight miles north of Kernville. Numerous residences are threatened.
