NEWPORT, Ore. -- Geologists from the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) and the Oregon Civil Air Patrol are teaming up this weekend to simulate the response to a major earthquake on the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The goal of the exercise is to simulate reconnaissance efforts following a major earthquake on the Cascadia Subduction Zone.
It's all in an effort to prepare for major earthquakes that could potentially trigger tsunamis on the coast and widespread landslide activity in the Coast range, which would shut down major highway corridors that connect the Willamette Valley to the coast, according to DOGAMI scientist Jonathan Allan.
The agencies will be conducting aerial surveillance of the coast, along the Columbia River, Highway 20 and 34 corridors and in southern Oregon. Scientists may use this documentation to improve hazard maps and information that can be used to safe-guard the environment, people and vulnerable infrastructure, like roads, bridges, utility lines and communications.
