Re: [californiadisasters] Thank goodness for this group.

Jim,

What Newnethboy is trying to say is "THANK YOU" for the kind comments and he not only would like to agree with you but actually does, too. ;-p

In all seriousness though, the it is easy to talk about the government as some big evil monolithic structure forgetting that it is populated by many of the people on this group as well as many others like them who are not on this list.

Dr. Kate's colleague across the street at the USGS, Dr. Lucy is part of that government entity to which you refer and there are no facts to suggest she is hiding or suppressing any vital quake hazard information in order to candy-coat the situation.

The fact of the matter is that in the Information Age that also happens to coincide with a now-prolonged period of public cynicism and skepticism about the Establishment that there are either hardly any secrets and the few there are generally don't stay secret very long.

Indeed, a skeptic could make just as strong an argument that Cal Tech and the USGS overstate the risks in order to afford more job security and drum up more grant money.

I don't hold this view but my point is the conspiracy angle usually cuts both ways all the while being utterly false both ways.

As an admin on this group, quite naturally I'd like to agree with you.

However, the fact is that members here are human too, and we range from the
top experts in the various fields to real ding-a-lings. This group has seen
some posts that are as inaccurate as some of the government statements you
refer to.

Bottom line is that, in some of these things, when something happens, we'll
know what was going to happen.
