No I did not know about the Mazon Creek fossils but will note them down for a field trip after the winter...

These are really part of the Francis Creek shale deposits (Pennsylvanian). Mining south of Kankakee made huge chat/clay piles that include a lot of the concretion nodules. A popular way to crack them open is to heat and then drop in cold water. Slower and safer, although more time consuming, is the freeze and thaw approach.  You can see pictures at the ESCONI site:
