[californiadisasters] Spotter and Skywarn News - January 2012

Spotter and Skywarn News

Skywarn training is coming up in San Bernardino County. Phill Dupree, our Skywarn director for that county, and Alex Tardy, our Warning Coordination Meteorologist and Skywarn/Spotter manager, has organized training sessions in Wrightwood on 25 February, and in Lake Arrowhead on a date this Spring yet to be determined. Veteran Skywarn spotters and prospective Skywarn spotters stay tuned to communication from Alex for details.

The second order of NWS San Diego Skywarn shirts was made and should be distributed shortly. Thanks to all those who placed an order and paid al-ready.

We loved the spotter support received lately, especially on 1-2 December when 15 to 20 inches of snow fell in Big Bear Lake, while only a trace fell in Wrightwood. Michael Mojarro (RIV187) and Shaun Hawke of Onyx Peak (SBD714) gave us several updating reports, which amounted to 18 inches of new snow in the Big Bear Lake area.

Excellent support also came on the wind and snow storm of 16-17 December. Carol Burtis (ORA151) of Huntington Beach and the Deans in Sage (RIV151) gave us timely and useful wind re-ports. Scott O'Donnell of Yorba Linda (ORA220) gave us a very detailed wind report and then sent pictures of damage while the wind was still blowing! Nancy Velasquez of Boulevard (SDG539) made a great hail report. Thanks for these reports and keep them coming!
