Forest Service, Kern County, and BLM firefighters are responding to
the Piute Complex of wildfires. The Complex consists of two primary
wildfires, the Clear Fire and the Heald Fire. These fires started from
lightning strikes during Friday night's storms. The fires were both
reported shortly after noon on Saturday, August 4. Firefighters
quickly contained six other lightning caused wildfires.
The Clear fire is located twelve miles South of Lake Isabella. As of
Saturday night, it is estimated to be 400 acres in size. The Heald
Fire is to the east of the Clear Fire in the northeast part of the
Piute Mountains; and it is currently estimated at 250 acres in size.
Both fires are currently burning on Forest Service land.
The Kern County Fire Department sent a strike team of engines to
assist with structure protection in the Valley View community. Other
crews assigned to the fire include: Crew 7 from Kern County Fire, Bear
Divide Hotshots, Golden Eagle Hotshots, Rio Bravo Hotshots, and Kings
River Hotshots. Smokejumpers were dispatched to the Heald Fire due to
its remote and rugged location. Fixed wing and helicopters will
continue to operate in the area to fight the fires. Kern River Ranger
District of the Sequoia National Forest and the Kern County Fire
Department will remain on lightning plan fire watch for the next 24
hours. A Type Two Incident Management Team is expected to take over
the Piute Complex in the next 24 hours.
