Local households, businesses and communities are encouraged to make emergency preparedness plans this month, according to a news release the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors issued Wednesday.

The local proclamation supports National Preparedness Month, an effort founded after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

One of the key messages of the campaign is "to be prepared in the event an emergency causes you to be self-reliant for three or more days without utilities and electricity, water service, access to a supermarket or local services, or even without response from police, fire or rescue," the news release states.

To help residents, two public events are planned in San Luis Obispo. The first will take place at the free Sheriff's Family Day at the Ranch event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 14 at 100 Madonna Road. The second is at the Disaster Preparedness for Small and Medium Sized Businesses workshop, slated for noon to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at 1010 Murray St. The workshop costs $21 for members of the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce and $25 for everyone else.

The San Luis Obispo County Office of Emergency Services also encourages residents to start forming plans by using resources from its website, www.slocounty.ca.gov/OES.htm, or by calling its office at 781-5011.

Other resources are listed on the Federal Emergency Management Agency's website, www.ready.gov, and at the American Red Cross, www.redcross.org/ca/san-luis-obispo.
