Re: [californiadisasters] Today's Deadly SoCal Lightning

That special marine warning I posted earlier was for that Catalina storm but you are right about the Venice Beach storm... very garden variety storm but it does not matter... a thunderstorm is a thunderstorm and anybody out on that beach today during that storm or any of them at any place outdoors was not following the rules.

I was tracking the Venice storm on radar before, during, and after the deadly bolt hit the ground.   From what I could observe, the color of radar blob never got any more intense than light to medium green.   So when I learned of the ground contact and injuries, I was really surprised.   The storm over Catalina on the other hand had yellow and red in it.  No surprise there with the lightning strike.

So the Venice incident today was a learning lesson for many.    Even the fire department commented on having to rethink their warning procedures for weaker storms.
