Notes
Tonight at 2:35 A.M. in 1872 a mighty earthquake struck the Eastern Central California region centered in the Owens Valley. This event was generated by a rupture of the Owens Valley Fault System which created a scarp from the Haiwee Reservoir at the south end to Big Pine at the north end. The maximum horizontal displacement was 35-40 feet with maximum vertical displacement of 15-20 feet. This quake was felt from San Diego, CA, to Red Bluff, CA. Although the length of the fault rupture was less than that of the 1857 Fort Tejon Quake or the 1906 San Francisco Quakes along the San Andreas Fault System this event is put in the same league as they due to the similar-sized felt area and the similar to superior horizontal and vertical offsets of the fault scarp generated by the quake thus putting it in the upper M7 range to lower M8 range. The quake killed 27 people at Lone Pine, CA, where most of the buildings were destroyed but also caused considerable damage throughout Inyo County. An interesting geologic feature created by this event was the lowering of a block of crust (called a graben) in the area that would later fill with water to become Diaz Lake.
