People in several areas in East Tennessee felt the ground rumble late Wednesday night, after a weak earthquake shook the area.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 2.8-magnitude earthquake occurred near Decatur, Tenn. at 11:21 p.m. People alerted WBIR on Facebook that they felt the quake in areas like Athens, Niota, and Sweetwater.
The largest earthquake in Tennessee history occurred on Aug. 17, 1865 near Memphis, Tenn., measuring at 5.0 on the Richter scale. The earthquake was so strong, it shook chimneys from roofs in Memphis, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The rumble even churned waves in the Mississippi River, similar to those created from a passing steamboat. People as far as St. Louis, Jackson, Miss., and even Illinois felt the shake.
