Blaze charred 170 acres, was 68 percent contained off Wildcat Canyon Road

Michael Cali — San Diego Union-TribuneLAKESIDE — A fast-moving brush fire that charred 170 acres and prompted a handful of evacuations near the Barona Resort & Casino was mostly out by Thursday afternoon, a fire official said.
The Wildcat fire sparked about 4:50 p.m. Wednesday on Wildcat Canyon Road near Akuunyaa Way, about two miles north of the casino. Flames quickly burned across rocky, hilly terrain, and deputies helped evacuate seven Barona Indian Reservation homes, Cal Fire reported. No structures were damaged.
It was Cal Fire's largest wildfire in San Diego County so far this year, Cal Fire Capt. Kendal Bortisser said.
Hundreds of firefighters from San Diego, Orange and Los Angeles counties, with help from firefighting aircraft, worked to put out the blaze. The fire's progress slowed by nightfall on Wednesday and by Thursday afternoon, it was 68 percent contained.
No aircraft were used on the fire on Thursday, and many firefighters were released from the Wildcat fire to fight a larger one in San Bernardino County, Bortisser said.
"There has been no fire activity at all since sunrise," Bortisser said.
He said a little more than 100 firefighters remained to cut fire lines around the fire perimeter and douse hot-spots through the night.
One firefighter suffered a medically related injury Thursday and was hoisted by helicopter to a waiting ambulance. She was treated at a hospital.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
