U.S. Northeast Winter Storm Situation Report #1 (Dec 23)
Highlights:
· Major winter storm ongoing for East Coast today into early Sunday. Winter storm warnings are in place from GA to MA and blizzard warnings are in place from VA to NY.
· The National Weather Service reports that snow is falling at 1-3 inches per hour. Coastal flooding is a concern from DE to MA.
· High winds are expected with gusts up to 60 mph in Northeast.
· Nine fatalities have been reported (NC: 6 confirmed; TN: 2 unconfirmed; VA: 1 unconfirmed).
· As of 8:30am ET approximately 200,000 customers are without power across the northeast.
· The DC Metro and NJ Transit have suspended service. Amtrak is operating a modified schedule with no service south of DC.
· Due to deteriorating road conditions and poor visibility, NYC Transit and MTA Bus have suspended all local, limited and express bus service. Access-A-Ride service has also begun an orderly shutdown of service.
· There have been numerous flight cancelations/delays nationwide.
· Currently there are no requests for FEMA assistance.
· State of Emergencies has been declared in: SC, VA, PA, MD, WV, NC, KY, TN, NJ, & DC.
· EOC Status: DC, VA, & NC Fully Activated; NJ, NY, DE, MD, PA, WV, TN, KY, GA, & MS Partially Activated.
· 1,140 National Guardsman activated (484 in VA; 180 in NJ, 171 in DC, 101 in KY).
· North Carolina is reported that hardest hit areas are Wake, Johnston & Harnett counties because of storm direction and rain/sleet; major power outages there.
· The FEMA National Watch Center is at Enhanced Watch.
· The FEMA Region III RRCC is Partially Activated and the Region IV is at Enhanced Watch and all other regions remain at normal operations.
· FEMA Liaison Officers have been deployed to the following States: DC, MD, VA, GA, PA, & NC.
