Notes
At a quarter after 9 A.M. on this date in 1977, what would become known as the "Honda Canyon Fire" exploded out of Honda Canyon within the confines of Vandenberg Air Force Base and driven by fierce Santa Ana Winds gusting from 60-75 m.p.h. overran firefighters and base personnel. The base commander, the base fire chief and his assistant were killed as well as a dozer operator who died later at a hospital and injured an additional 65 people. Ultimately this fire blackened 9,000 acres. In the aftermath of this tragedy the Vandenberg Hotshots were created and continue to serve residents of the Central Coast to this day.
