On this date in 2003 heavy rains in the San Bernardino Mountains much of which had burned in epic wildfires two months before generated a 12-foot high roiling wall of water, sediment, boulders, snags, cars, and everything else that got caught up in it killing 13 people at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Camp in Waterman Canyon near San Bernardino. Nearby, in Devore, which also was located in a burn area from the recent fires, a second flash flood overwhelmed a KOA campground killing two more people.
