Notes
By about this time on Christmas Day 2004 we were getting preliminary reports of a major earthquake in Western Sumatra, Indonesia and of an resulting tsunami. The early reports of the earthquake parameters were significantly understating its size (initial reports pegged it at Mw8.4 when it was actually Mw9.15)and the full magnitude of the horror and tragedy of the tsunami (maximum run-up of over 100 feet south of Banda Aceh) were yet unknown to the outside world. Someday, this will happen to the West Coast of the United States when the Cascadia Subduction Zone explodes in another Great Quake like the one that occurred on the night of January 26, 1700, and Northwest California will be devastated by it.
