[californiadisasters] Massive Solar Flare Narrowly Misses Earth, EMP Disaster Barely Avoided

Massive solar flare narrowly misses Earth, EMP disaster barely avoided

By PAUL BEDARD | Washington Examiner | JULY 31, 2013 AT 2:35 PM

The earth barely missed taking a massive solar punch in the teeth two weeks ago, an "electromagnetic pulse" so big that it could have knocked out power, cars and iPhones throughout the United States.

Two EMP experts told Secrets that the EMP flashed through earth's typical orbit around the sun about two weeks before the planet got there.

"The world escaped an EMP catastrophe," said Henry Cooper, who lead strategic arms negotiations with the Soviet Union under President Reagan, and who now heads High Frontier, a group pushing for missile defense.

"There had been a near-miss about two weeks ago, a Carrington-class coronal mass ejection crossed the orbit of the Earth and basically just missed us," said Peter Vincent Pry, who served on the Congressional EMP Threat Commission from 2001-2008. He was referring to the 1859 EMP named after astronomer Richard Carrington that melted telegraph lines in Europe and North America.

"Basically this is a Russian roulette thing," added Pry. "We narrowly escape from a Carrington-class disaster."

Pry, Cooper, and former CIA Director James Woolsey have been recently demanding that Washington prepare the nation's electric grid for an EMP, either from the sun or an enemy's nuclear bomb. They want the 2,000-3,000 transformers in the grid protected with a high-tech metal box and spares ready to rebuild the system. Woolsey said knocking out just 20 would shut down electricity to parts of the nation "for a long time."

But Washington is giving them the cold shoulder, especially the administration. Woolsey told Secrets that some in Congress are interested in the issue, but the administration is just in the "beginnings" of paying attention.

Woolsey said that Air Force One and aircraft used by the Strategic Air Command to control nuclear-tipped missiles are hardened against an EMP.

The EMP effect is not rare. One occurred in Canada in 1989, knocking out Quebec's electric transmission system. And North Korea is reportedly testing a device to attack the U.S. with an EMP attack.

The trio appeared at an event in Washington this week, but Pry said getting the nation's leaders interested in the issue is difficult and educating the public about EMP hard too. "The education curve isn't going up fast enough," he said.

At the event, Cooper suggested that North Korea might already have the capability to launch an EMP against the United States. He said in December, North Korea tested its so-called Space Launch Vehicle which could deliver a stealthy nuclear attack on the United States by orbiting a nuclear weapon over the South Pole where the U.S. has no radar or missile interceptors facing south. North Korea, he said, apparently orbited a satellite over the south polar region on a trajectory and altitude consistent with making a surprise nuclear EMP attack against the United States.

Woolsey and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich are the honorary co-chairs of a new EMP Coalition pushing for protections to the electric grid, national security, and civilian infrastructures.

Re: [Geology2] The Salton Trough

Allison,

The Salton Sea existed before in the form of several areal lakes during the Pleistocene, but the best known is ancient Lake Cahuilla, which was created when the Colorado River's flow was diverted naturally during a time prior to Spanish presence in the region. Lake Cahuilla was over 3 times as large as the present Salton Sea and inundated areas that include the cities of Indio and Mexicali. When the Colorado River shifted once more, the lake was cut off from any form of inflowing fresh water, as it exists in a basin between two mountain ranges (the Chocolate Mountains to the east and the Santa Rosas to the west). In 1905, the Salton gained more fresh water thanks to a plan to use the Colorado River's flow to irrigate the Salton Basin, but the project ended in disaster thanks to flooding. The Colorado began to periodically flood the Salton Sea, which led to the construction of Hoover Dam. And that is why there will be no more drainage into the Salton, except for agricultural runoff.

I have a preserved piece of tufa from the shoreline of Lake Cahuilla, as my husband and I used to walk along the edges of that former shoreline. There is even a huge display near the northwestern edge of the sea called Travertine Rock (which has been terribly marked with graffiti). The biodiversity there is amazing, from plants to reptiles to birds that have evolved over the years and have adapted successfully to their environment. In turn, the Salton has become an important waterway for a vast number of migrating birds, who depend on the water for food and the area for a place to raise their young. The run off from man's agricultural presence in the area is causing the salinity to increase, as well as the constant rise in pH in the sea. This is why the fight to save the Salton is so important.

In the spring, there is a dormant volcano near Obsidian Butte (another plug) that abuts the sea and it is a major site for reproduction for these birds and for a couple of months, is closed off to the public.

Hope this info helps,

Lin

I am confused... this article says that the Sea was formed by the rupture of an irrigation canal. But when I googled Salton Sea, that Wikipedia article said the sea is NOT a man made lake. The Imperial and Coachella Valleys of southern California, and the corresponding Mexicali Valley and Colorado River Delta in Mexico, are part of the Salton Trough. This large geologic structure, known to geologists as a graben or rift valley, extends into the Gulf of California. The trough is a geologically complex zone formed by the interaction of the San Andreas transform fault system—which is, broadly speaking, moving southern California towards Alaska—and the northward motion of the Gulf of California segment of the East Pacific Rise, which continues to widen the Gulf of California by seafloor spreading.
Sediments deposited by the Colorado River have been filling the northern rift valley (the Salton Trough) for several million years, excluding the waters of the Gulf of California, and providing a fertile environment for the development of extensive, irrigation-aided agriculture in the region (visible as green and yellow-brown fields at image center). The Salton Sea, a favorite landmark of astronauts in low-earth orbit, was formed by the rupture of an irrigation canal in 1905 and today is sustained by agricultural runoff water.
A wide array of landforms and land uses in the Salton Trough are visible from space. In addition to the agricultural fields and Salton Sea, several metropolitan areas are visible, including Yuma, Arizona; Mexicali, Mexico; and the San Diego-Tijuana conurbation on the Pacific Coast (image left). The 72-kilometer-long Algodones Dunefield also is visible at image top right.
Astronaut photograph ISS036-E-11034 was acquired on June 21, 2013, with a Nikon D3S digital camera using a 50 millimeter lens, and is provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations experiment and Image Science & Analysis Laboratory, Johnson Space Center. The image was taken by the Expedition 36 crew. It has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast, and lens artifacts have been removed. The International Space Station Program supports the laboratory as part of the ISS National Lab to help astronauts take pictures of Earth that will be of the greatest value to scientists and the public, and to make those images freely available on the Internet. [Geology2] Nearly 3,900 New Maps in Time for Summer

Nearly 3,900 New Maps in Time for Summer

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Newly designed maps covering Indiana, Iowa, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia are now available online for free download

To keep pace with a rapid schedule and increasing demand, the USGS has posted new US Topo quadrangles covering Indiana(640 maps), Iowa (1,011 maps), North Carolina (833 maps), Pennsylvania (798 maps) and Virginia (596 maps). These new quads replace the first edition US Topo maps for those states. The replaced maps will be added to the USGS Historical Topographic Map Collection and are also available for free download from The National Map and the USGS Map Locator & Downloader website.

"The newly redesigned US Topo maps are visually appealing, especially with the addition of the shaded relief layer", explained Bob Davis, the new US Topo Project Manager. "The addition of shaded relief and other design components demonstrate our commitment to improving the product to meet our users' needs. I encourage you to download these maps, compare them against previous US Topo maps and drop us your comments. We value your input."

US Topo maps now have a crisper, cleaner design - enhancing readability of maps for online and printed use. Map symbols are easier to read over the digital aerial photograph layer whether the imagery is turned on or off. Improvements to symbol definitions (color, line thickness, line symbols, area fills), layer order, and annotation fonts are additional features of this supplemental release. Users can now adjust the transparency for some features and layers to increase visibility of multiple competing layers.

US Topo maps are updated every three years, with the initial round completed last September. Maps for Hawaii are currently in production with Alaska production starting later this year.

Re-design enhancements and new features:

  • Crisper, cleaner design improves online and printed readability while retaining the look and feel of traditional USGS topographic maps
  • New functional road classification schema has been applied
  • A slight screening (transparency) has been applied to some features to enhance visibility of multiple competing layers
  • Updated free fonts that support diacritics
  • New PDF Legend attachment
  • Metadata formatted to support multiple browsers
  • New shaded relief layer for enhanced view of the terrain
  • Military installation boundaries, post offices and cemeteries

US Topo maps are created from geographic datasets in The National Map, and deliver visible content such as high-resolution aerial photography, which was not available on older paper-based topographic maps. The new US Topo maps provide modern technical advantages that support wider and faster public distribution and on-screen geographic analysis tools for users.

The new digital electronic topographic maps are delivered in GeoPDF image software format and may be viewed using Adobe Reader, available as a no cost download.

For more information, go to: http://nationalmap.gov/ustopo/

Re: [Geology2] Re: The Salton Trough

Well Mother Nature sometimes selects things for extinction. How do we know that is not the case here? The Dead sea in Israel is having trouble too I think. Allison

Very pretty picture, but the Salton Sea itself is a huge problem. The
irrigation runoff that keeps it full is making it saltier and saltier,
threatening to turn it into a dead sea. Big fish die-offs, etc.
Government agencies are spending millions on experimental schemes to try
to find some way to reduce the salinity.

Guess that's what happens when you frack around with mother nature.

Re: [Geology2] The Salton Trough

I am confused... this article says that the Sea was formed by the rupture of an irrigation canal. But when I googled Salton Sea, that Wikipedia article said the sea is NOT a man made lake. So... how does one define the Sea? There is an awful lot of biodiversity for something that only formed in 1910 or 1911..forget which. Allison

Additional images taken by astronauts and cosmonauts can be viewed at the NASA/JSC Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth. Caption by William L. Stefanov, Jacobs/JETS at NASA-JSC.

[Geology2] Re: The Salton Trough

Very pretty picture, but the Salton Sea itself is a huge problem. The
irrigation runoff that keeps it full is making it saltier and saltier,
threatening to turn it into a dead sea. Big fish die-offs, etc.
Government agencies are spending millions on experimental schemes to try
to find some way to reduce the salinity.

Guess that's what happens when you frack around with mother nature.
