RE: [californiadisasters] Monitor The Monsoon Via Webcam/Sat/Radar/Etc.

Let’s hope that is enough rainfall to qualify the lightning as ‘wet’.  Or the state will wish it still had the aircraft contract and higher staffing.  I’ll expect some flash flood warnings for the desert areas too.

[californiadisasters] Monitor The Monsoon Via Webcam/Sat/Radar/Etc.

As I type this the monsoon is surging into Southern and Eastern California. There are four particularly great webcams or webcam galleries I recommend for remote monitoring of this weather phenomenon:

Mount Wilson Towercam: http://obs.astro.ucla.edu/towercam.htm#imagetop

Owens Lake Dustcams: http://www.gbuapcd.org/dustcam.htm

Sierra Firecams: http://sierrafire.cr.usgs.gov/swfrs/pages/WebCam.htm

UCSD HPWREN webcams: http://hpwren.ucsd.edu/cameras/

For satellite imagery nothing beats this:

Here is your radar round-down:

Then there are the lightning trackers:

[Geology2] USGS wants monitoring tower erected in Crater Lake

USGS wants monitoring tower erected in Crater Lake

In order to monitor a potentially active volcano in Oregon's Crater Lake National Park, the U.S. Geological Survey wants to build a 60-foot tall tower that will allow the transmission of information from surveying instruments.

The Associated Press

CRATER LAKE, Ore. —

In order to monitor a potentially active volcano in Oregon's Crater Lake National Park, the U.S. Geological Survey wants to build a 60-foot tall tower that will allow the transmission of information from surveying instruments.

The Medford Mail Tribune reports the monitoring agency released a draft report last week in which it noted the current infrastructure in the park can't support the additional load needed to transmit volcanic monitoring data to the Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, Wash.

The new tower would allow 24-hour monitoring of the volcano.

Scientists can use warning signs such as small earthquakes, release of volcanic gases and swelling of the volcano surface to predict an eruption.

[Geology2] New mud volcano discovered on Cheleken peninsula in Turkmenistan

New mud volcano discovered on Cheleken peninsula in Turkmenistan

New mud volcano discovered on Cheleken peninsula in Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, July 30 / Trend H.Hasanov /

A new mud volcano was discovered on the Cheleken peninsula in Turkmenistan, the Neytralniy Turkmenistan newspaper reported with reference to local scientists Anatoly Bushmakin and Aman Nigarov.

Mud volcanoes are not uncommon in Turkmenistan.

The presence of a large high-pressure underground natural gas reserves is a prerequisite for the mud eruption. Almost half of all mud volcanoes in the world are located in the area of the South Caspian Basin and about thirty of them - in western Turkmenistan.

"Geologists pay a special attention to the Cheleken peninsula. It records a lot of tectonic fractures. A powerful eruption of mud volcanoes was observed here in the past," the paper reported.
The Cheleken Alakel is the largest volcano in western Turkmenistan. The separate blocks of rock ejected from the crater of the volcano from great depths hit 2-3 meters in diameter.

The frozen mudflow is observed at a distance of 1.5 kilometers from the volcano. Oil is extracted from the depth of over 2,000 meters in the Alakel volcano area.
The scientists point out that a new active mud volcano has recently formed at the foot of the volcano. "It is a small, regularly shaped cone, composed of clay material with a small admixture of rock fragments, sometimes with a film of oil on the surface."

"The volcano is active. It reached a height of 7 meters by mid 2011. New portions of gas and dust erupt every few seconds, periodically. The cone stands grayish-green on the yellow-brown background of the Neogene rocks. "

According to scientists, the appearance of new active mud volcanoes can mean the beginning of "awakening" of the ancient volcano Alakel.

[Geology2] Thursday’s Earthquake Prompts Alaskans To Prepare For The Next Big One

Thursday's Earthquake Prompts Alaskans To Prepare For The Next Big One

Magnitude 5.3 shaker was felt throughout Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley

By Heather VacLav

ANCHORAGE—It was quite the wake-up call Thursday morning, and not just because a magnitude 5.3 earthquake shook some south central Alaskans out of their beds.

Shaking buildings served as a literal wake-up call to prepare Alaskans for the next big one.

The Alaska Earthquake Information Center says the magnitude 5.3 quake occurred at 6 a.m. Thursday about eight miles northwest of Skwentna and 74 miles northwest of Anchorage. State officials say there are no immediate reports of damage.

Even though USGS seismologists reported it as a moderate earthquake, it was large enough to open up people's eyes to the bigger issue.

Alaska wasn't always home for Eb Hope, but 30 years ago, he decided to raise his family here. In that time, Alaskan habits shaped his life.

"I think after a while up here you just become programmed to it," Pope said. "You take earthquakes as just a natural thing that happens all the time. Not the big ones, the shakers, but it just becomes a normal part of life."

But after Thursday's earthquake, something changed.

"I look at who is at my house, and what could happen if it really goes bad," Pope said. "Am I going to be able to take care of this group? Until help comes, until we can get back to a natural state of life, we can to a point, for the long haul [but] I don't think I have what I need to last two to three weeks."

The KTVA-CBS 11 morning show started right when the earthquake began shaking in Anchorage. Morning meteorologist Eric Snitil felt the earthquake live on-air during his first segment.

Snitil isn't used to the shaking though. He moved to Alaska from Ohio less than a year ago, and this morning was a reminder.

"It was probably a good lesson from my perspective at least for a safety standpoint, to know that the next time that happens I might have to do a little more hiding [under the weather desk] as opposed to smiling [on camera] as if nothing is going on," Snitil said.

However, hiding under a desk isn't the only way Alaskans can prepare for an earthquake. Using natural disaster kits is one way the American Red Cross continues to push people to get ready before a massive earthquake strikes.

"We really encourage folks to really be self-sufficient for those first 72 hours," said Katie Bender, American Red Cross of Alaska. "It may not be pretty but it will get you through."

The Red Cross message has evolved over years, just like Pope's plan.

"I ain't crawling under no table," Pope said, laughing. "It 's a fact of life here. It's something to take it serious. I take earthquakes serious. But have I ever got real serious about being prepared? No, I haven't. Will I now? Yes."

The American Red Cross' 72-hour emergency kit is a quick start to prepare for earthquakes. The Red Cross sells it online for $60 and includes a battery/solar panel/crank radio and flashlight, an emergency blanket, food bars and even work gloves.

Re: [californiadisasters] Poll: Californians Increasingly Are Luddites

You are correct. Polls / surveys are written to support a person or groups hypothesize.

Mark Twain observed that there are: Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics.
Whenever "statistics" are used to prove a point already claimed, Twain was
right.

Of course, in this regard "statistics" and "polls" are pretty much
interchangeable. If a poll is conducted by an expert, impartial
person/organization, the theory of polling is sound. However, it's
incredibly easy to bias a poll:

Q: Would you prefer to risk your children's future health and well-being,
not to mention their ability to have children without birth defects by
allowing a nuclear power plant to be built within a thousand mile of you, or
would you prefer to rely on clean-burning natural gas which has been proven
safe in use for over a hundred years and whose pipelines make no impact
whatsoever on the environment?

Q: Will you sign this petition urging Congress to ban the distribution and
use of dihydrogen monoxide, a major component of Acid Rain, a proven
contributor to rust, a significant factor in thousands of lives lost to
drowning?
